We are a retired American couple looking for a house sitter this March for a stay possibly extending several months. We live in a recently-built, solar home with solar pool, in an area of horse ranches ten minutes outside San Miguel de Allende, a charming colonial town in Guanajuato, Mexico.

*Responsibilities* We are looking for someone to care for our home, provide company and exercise for our dogs— one standard poodles, age 7, and a 5 year old terrier-mix rescue—and maintain our garden and small orchard with the help of our part-time gardener and housekeeper.

*Features of the property and location* San Miguel de Allende is a World Heritage Designated city in the colonial highlands of Mexico, about three and a half hours West of Mexico city by car or bus. At 6,200 ft. (1,900 meters), San Miguel is considered high desert; mild temperatures year- round and a moderate rainy season in the summer make it a close to ideal climate. Our nearest international airport is in León Guanajuato, about 1.5 hours away by shuttle. Air travel can be cheaper when flying into Mexico City, but this involves taking connector buses, a sometimes slow trip, or a more expensive shuttle.

Our house is part of a small community called Los Lopez, ten minutes from the center of town by car in the direction of La Cieneguita. Widely-spaced properties surrounding ours include horse farms and cornfields. Various transportation arrangements are available. We feel very secure in our area. Our property is fully fenced, our neighbors watch out for us, and Los Lopez is a quiet community, many of whom are employed by our neighbors and ourselves.

We built our house and pool on one and a quarter acres in 2013, choosing a sustainable builder and using compressed earth block walls for a steady indoor temperature. The house has a comfortable open floor plan with one bedroom and two full baths. (Blow-up queen bed for kids.) Our house is powered entirely by solar panels with a battery bank and generator back-up, and we have a cistern for water catchment during the rainy season. We have a built-in, whole-house water purification system, and toilets which can handle flushing paper, unlike much of Mexican plumbing. New appliances and an ample pantry make cooking a pleasure. We have wi-fi , and an in-house cell phone signal booster. Low cost, pay as you go cell phones are readily available. We do not own a TV.

The garden has developed quickly. The house is surrounded by raised beds; a small frisbee lawn borders the pool. Fence plantings of roses, honeysuckle and jasmine are sthriving  on the fences and native trees and bushes have been planted at the top fence. There are three cactus gardens and several raised vegetable beds, and, most recently, a small orchard. We have tried to use native and drought-resistant plants and are installing drip systems as we go.

Top of our list of concerns is the health and happiness of our dogs.  Our poodle, Remy,  is pretty easygoing but has some issues with fear when it comes to traffic and small noisy children, from whom he tends to hide. Both dogs are good natured and love cuddling. Remy likes to wade  in the pool for and enjoys frisbee. Our rescue, Maggie, is our outdoor watch dog. She sleeps and is fed outdoors but comes in and out of the house during the day.. The dogs play get along together well.

We also have a canary who is easy to keep happy with food, water, a bath tub, occasional cage cleaning and some greens.

Thank you for considering caring for our home. San Miguel is a cosmopolitan city where you can get along with minimum Spanish or find a wonderful Spanish tutor to make your time here even richer. We think you will find our house delightful and San Miguel one of the most beautiful, culturally rich cities in Mexico.
