Here's an opportunity to soak up  lots of peace and quiet while enjoying our unique passive solar home in sunny Santa Fe this winter. We're just 20 minutes from the historic downtown Plaza in a subdivision of homes on 5-acre-minium lots. We have great views of the mountains and we're right by an access point for the Santa Fe Rail Trail which is great for walks and bike rides. There isn't much light pollution so the night sky is amazing. Writers and artists especially love being out here.

Santa Fe is at 7,000 ft. and it snows here in winter sometimes, but usually melts off in a day or two. The Santa Fe Ski Basin is a 45-minute drive away and there are plenty of trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. If it's dry, there are lots of hiking trails a short distance away.

We designed and built our home ourselves in the mid 1980s and it is more rustic than refined, but it's classy in its own way. It's comfortable and inviting and keeps us aware of the natural beauty around us.

When it's sunny outside, the house is warm as toast inside and no heating is required. If it's cloudy, heat comes from a pellet stove in the living room or a fireplace in the den, or from electric baseboard heaters that are in every room. When it's really cold, we turn on our dry sauna to sit and sweat a while.

Our primary need is loving care for our two adorable lap dogs who love to cuddle — after they get to know you. One (13 lbs.) is elderly, fairly deaf and requires some medications that are easy to administer, but must be given consistently. The other (10 lbs.) is young, funny, and quick to alert us to visitors, odd noises or the UPS truck. Once she gets to know you she will follow you everywhere.

We have a couple dozen houseplants, but most need only weekly watering. We like to put out food and water for the wild bird population, but it's not mandatory.

January 9-February 8, 2017.
