This is a great housesitting opportunity for two months in the summer at a beautiful setting in Southeast Alaska. Petersburg is a nice small town with touring, hiking, fishing, and animal watching opportunities. Our house is spacious with lots of light from large windows overlooking Frederick Sound. Eagle and deer sightings are guaranteed and whale sightings are likely from the living room.
Our house is currently under construction although it is liveable and comfortable. My family has been living here over a year and building in our spare time, rural Alaskan style. Currently there are two finished bedrooms and a bathroom, and there will be at least one more finished bedroom and bath on the second floor in the next month. The kitchen is fully functional. The house has an HVAC system, on demand hot water, and is comfortable, but the floor is plywood and the drywall is not finished in some of the rooms. The interior stairs have not been put in yet, so access to the second floor is through code compliant exterior stairs.
Responsibilities of the housesitter will be to water our plants and take care of my son's chickens. The chickens need checked twice a day for feed, water, and eggs, and their straw cleaned out once a week. This isn't a time consuming job but does require some physical effort and bending. Housesitters would also need to give eggs to his customers when they come by to keep his business going while we are gone, but there will also be plenty of fresh eggs for them.
Petersburg is a very nice place to be in the summer and houses usually rent for several thousand a month during the tourist season, so this is a great opportunity to enjoy the best time of the year in the prettiest part of Alaska. Google Petersburg and look at the town, trails, and weather, to have an idea of what to expect.
Nonsmoking and references are required and experience is preferred. Alaska Airlines is the only air service into town from Seattle. Driving here is not possible since Petersburg is on an island, but the Alaska Marine Highway ferry is an option which also transports cars from Seattle. Please look into travel options for yourself before applying as I tend to get a lot of applications from housesitters excited to come to Alaska but unprepared for the logistics of travel here. Send me a message if you're interested.
