We are looking for a hearty loving couple who want to experience sustainable life on a small Greek island. If you are available next December and LOVE kitties, please read on. This is a unique stay, caring for our special needs kitty, Roo, and 5 more indoor-outdoor kitties, all very precious and loving. We live in a beautiful spot on Leros island, which is 16k long and about 4 wide. Leros is quiet in the winter, there are not a lot of activites going on, bring some good books (we do have plenty) and explore the island, experience real Greek life.
I am American, my husband is English, we met, sailing and settled on Leros island. I am still working as a charter captain, Michael spends his time contining to build our sustainable home here, I help when I am not sailing. This has been a very long project, 10 years!
We are still working on our sustainable home and we do not have a complete solar electric system so electricity is limited; we heat with wood and cook on gas, we do not use a fridge in the winter and keep things cool in a cooler outside. (Refrigeration is overrated) We have lived on boats for over 20 years, we live in a similar way on land.
Winters can be cold, we live in less of the house in the winter when the cold sets in. When the sun shines, the house is warmer, we can heat water with the solar heater or the woodburning heater. We lead a minimalistic life and we look for a similar type of people to help us out. We spend time in the US and England with family while we are gone. Staying in our home does require some work and planning to be comfortable; wood is not plentiful so it must be conserved, we do not heat the whole house.
Roo is very special and we love her to bits, she can be a bit demanding of attention - she communicates beautifully, telling us what she wants and needs; she can walk, but must be helped up to where she sleeps, she is accustomed to sleeping with us. Our other 5 just need feeding and we ask that you pay them all attention, they are all very loving and are...our family.
Leros is served by 3-4 flights and ferries to Athens weekly. We have great shopping on Leros, a very good supermarket and fresh produce; there are a handful of good restaurants that stay open all winter (and great giro pitas!) as well as cafes. The harbor of Lakki stays fairly lively.
We may be able to give you the use of a car, or arrange an economical rental; town is a 40 min. walk, downhill, but back...is uphill...we do have 2 bicycles, but the last bit to the house is steep.
We require a couple that is at least 40 years of age and who have travelled and physically fit. This is really not a stay for a single person; possibly, if you are very fit and accustomed to being alone and self sufficient.
We look forward to hearing from you .
