What am I looking for in a house sitter?
We are looking for cat lovers! People who see cats as people! AND we are looking for intelligence, honesty, reliability, thoughtfulness, cleanliness, plant awareness... & the willingness, creativity & ability to deal with older house "stuff" if necessary ... not afraid of, & able to handle possible emergency situations (life is unpredictable).
What responsibilities will my house sitter have? *
We have 1 older family indoor/outdoor cat. She is loving, friendly & very agile & healthy for an old girl! Also 3 adult porch kitties who are slightly feral... 2 who have been with us since kittenhood yrs. Cat related things like one litter box, water changes, food bowls etc. AND 2 feral feedings which are much more than tossing food onto a sidewalk! are part of the routine. ... & property with lots of plantlife.
So, the rest is about the house / property, plants - mail - trash - normal summer housey things.
What are the good features of my property and location? *
We are still in a panademic, so this is a description of the island as it was... but there is still a lot happening, beaches not the least of it! Galveston Island is a tourist destination for beaches, art, antiques, surfing, boating, kayaking, fishing, seafood (& other great restaurants) etc. There is Art Walk every 5 wks. + many art related & other events & many festivals. Also, you will find really good breweries, bars & unique cafes. The historic district has a map to the 20+ post-Ike hurricane tree carvings...etc etc! It boasts Moody Gardens Pyramids w/such things as Imax, an aquarium, penguins, snakes, a butterfly house etc. (look it up). There's a major waterpark across from it, a State Park w/a bird watch/ preserve up the road from it, a number of very unique museums, the Artist Boat Kayaking trips, diving, golf courses, horseback riding (i think) & much more. We live 6 minutes (normal) walking from the gulf & beaches. Nasa is 30 mins. up the road & offers a stellar tour. Houston is an hour (or so) up the road & I cannot list even a fragment of what's available there!
We have a friendly front porch w/a slight sea breeze (when there is one) to hang out on & have a glass of ... yard also has a table to sit at & everywhere is very green.. an interesting artsy environment to hang out in on the inside, Roku streaming w/Netflix, Hulu, Prime, Paramount, Kanopy, Hoopla & all the hundreds of free streaming Roku stations. WiFi for your laptop or , espresso machine, microwave, dishwasher, (should you need it), several bathrooms (in case you are two) etc. Did I mention 6 minutes walking from the gulf & beaches?
What do potential house sitters need to consider before applying for this assignment?
I am asking for sitter(s) to come a few days early to "get the lay of the land" (so to speak): for the cats to get a bit familiar with you, for you to get a bit familiar with the cats, the house, & the whole situation.
Our house is "Art & Craft" style, early 1900's, w/an ethnic & artsy environment. There is more to know, more to do, than ie: in a condo.. this old house needs more attention & conciousness than a newer one. We are a Vegetarian/Pescatarian household & prefer land animals not be cooked in our kitchen.. tho no problem bringing them in ready to be eaten from a restaurant etc. If you like reading we have an amazing eclectic library, all over the house!
As for the idea of bringing your pet along, this MAY be possible... we can discuss.
September is still hurricane season here, so willingness to deal with the possibility of a big storm: lots of shutter closures, loss of electric, high winds, etc, & possible evacuation.. IF we know a storm is coming we will not leave.. there is usually a week or more warning, tho we have til flight day to determine if need to stay. If you are not from somewhere close enough to go home, & a hurricane arises, you will be welcome to stay until it passes.
