Looking for house/pet sitter.

My wife and I are working artists who will be away on a business trip to Europe October 2024. We are looking for a responsible person, or couple, who loves dogs and wish to spend time in Portland, Oregon. We live in a lovely home in a quiet neighborhood called Hillsdale, near downtown, within easy walking distance to shops, restaurants, groceries, a bakery, and yes, a Starbucks. We are 7-10 minutes from the downtown by car via multiple surface streets, and only 5 minutes away from a freeway entrance that can take you in any direction. There is also a bus stop which can take you directly into town without transfering, or out to Beaverton & Tigard on the West Side. This means our home is conveniently located for anyone looking to explore the PDX metropolitan area.


In addition, we have a good natured dog; a 7 year old wire-haired mini-dachshund who loves short walks and snuggling on the couch – which is why we are looking for you!

We have Fiber cable with many video services, and our home is fully furnished with a complete kitchen, dishwasher, and laundry. You will have your own bedroom with a queen bed and a newly remodeled bath, plus access to the entire house, excepting the master bedroom, which will be locked.

“ Gus the Gentle Dachshund ”

Thomas and Loralee live in a lovely home in Hillsdale (a suburb of Portland), with access to restaurants and grocery stores a short walk down the hill.  The house is comfortable and had everything that I needed.  I took care of Gus, a miniature dachshund, for the month of October.  Although it was a stressful month, I really adore Gus and would love to sit for them again.

It was stressful because just before Thomas and Loralee were to leave for their trip to France, Gus developed a spinal injury.  We discussed his condition, treatment and care and we agreed that I could handle things (mostly medication and confinement).  He did alright for a week or so but then as he started feeling better, he had a setback.  Thomas and I communicated by phone and text, and I ended up talking with the vet directly.  A trip to the vet for pain medication and an order to Amazon for a confinement pen allowed Gus to move around a bit, but not too much.  Thomas immediately reimbursed me for all the extra expenses, which was great.  Gus adjusted to his pen and we developed a routine and he was comfortable, if not lively.  I took care of him as if he was my own and he was okay when they got home.  I learned a lot about the breed, including that as many as 25% of them have intervertebral disc disease. 

I understand Gus will be getting spinal surgery soon, and I'd be more than happy to sit for them again in the future.  He's a cute little dog with a big (dachshund) personality.  I'm sure that when he's feeling better he's a fiesty and adorable companion.

My wife and I house and pet sat for one month early in 2022. The house was clean and the pets have been well taken care of and well trained (and sweet companions). We had excellent communication ewith the owners during the stay and there was a list of neighbors available to assist as needed. We did have small and unexpected expenses for specific dog needs and the house owners quickly reimbursed us.

Overall our time there was most comfortable and we are glad we were able to participate in this exchange. Glad to sit for them again as needed.
