Looking for semi-permanent live-in caretaker who enjoys self-sufficient lifestyle, quiet, and nature to help care for our desert homestead in exchange for room and some board (extras from the homestead in season). We require a reliable, honest person who can work independently but can take direction and work well with us as a team when we are here. We are birders and like to take trips away: could be short, less than a week, to more than a month trips, but are also here a lot. We raise turkeys and chickens and they would need to be fed and waters changed and eggs collected daily. We also have one outside parrot (Macaw) that needs to be fed and waters changed daily. Outdoor plants and garden will need to be watered, more in summer, and wild bird feeders kept filled.
This is approximately 2-3 hours of time needed for the chores except in summer when more watering is needed and the rest of the time is on your own. You would need to be able to lift 50 pound feed sacks to replenish the bins in the poultry houses as needed and have no back problems since there is bending involved in changing waters. This is a beautiful area with mild weather in fall through early spring. Summers are hot so with outdoor work and watering needed, you must be able to handle the heat. We may be able to compensate with a small stipend for the extra work required in the summer. We live outside the city limits on acreage, a quiet relaxing setting yet close to conveniences. You can hike right from our property: Saguaro National Monument trails are only a mile away.
You would need to be able to arrive a few days ahead for training/orientation. You will need to have your own vehicle. We have a 12' x 15' separate guest room with heating, cooling, and minimal kitchen you can sleep in or use your own camper if you have one. There is a detached bathroom exclusively for your use but you would need to use a composting toilet (lug-a-bucket system) since there is no septic out there. If we are gone, you may use the main house flush toilet. Non-smoker, no dogs or cats please.
If you like to garden and grow your own food, there is space to do that for long-term helpers.
Due to continuing Covid-19 pandemic, we require you have a negative Covid-19 test and practice good social distancing and mask wearing when out and about.
We are short on ideas on how to manage to keep the poultry and our supply of fresh eggs and meat, keep the plants alive, and care for a 40-year old Macaw and still be able to travel. If this sounds like something that appeals to you, please respond with something about yourself and your availability. If you can't do a long stint, we are open to other ideas. Thank you for considering us.
