I hope there might be a couple travelling and/or "in the neighbourhood" and available for a short term housesit? My husband and I are looking for house sitters for approx. 1 week in May 2020 (probably May 12th thru May 19th). We are looking for sitters who will also lovingly take care of my sweet pets: 4 cats, 4 ducks and 6 chickens….
Where do we live?
We live in Livingston, on the east coast of Guatemala. A tropical town that is only accessible by water, so take in mind it might feel a bit secluded and not all modern luxuries are available here. However the city of Puerto Barrios is only a 30 minute taxi boat ride away. Livingston is a town quite different from the rest of Guatemala. Because of Garifuna culture it has a completely different vibe. Most people would compare it to the tropical and reggae influenced Caribbean islands.
How do we live?
Our wooden carribean-style house is built on a hill with a lovely view over the Rio Dulce river and a big tropical garden where you can help yourself to coconuts. We are still finishing the last details on building our house, but we live here very comfortably already.
The house is located close to everything in town. A 200mtrs walk downhill will get you to the waterfront where you will find various restaurants and if you walk 200 mtrs the other way you will find yourself in the centre of town.
We collect rainwater for our dishes, shower, washing, etc. Our house has no airco (a warning beforehand: the month of May is the hottest month of the year, be prepared!) and no hot water. We are connected to the regular electricity grid and we have pretty good internet, but this can be unreliable here, so it might happen that electricity (and internet) shut down sometimes (from anywhere between an hour to two days). There is a hotel/restaurant close by with a generator that keeps their internet going if necessary. However, keep that in mind…
Who do we live with?
We have a big garden where the chickens and ducks roam around. The chickens sleep enclosed in their chicken coop though, because at night time we also have possums roaming the garden. We are fine with the possums and let them do their thing (unlike other people in this town).
And we have four cats... All of them brought in from the street as kittens they can be a bit shy, but they really are very sweet and cuddly.
Mostly the pet care is food and water in the mornings and end of the afternoons, a cuddle and some attention here and there and making sure everybody is safe at nightfall….
What is there to do in the area?
During the rest of the day of course you can make trips in the beautiful surroundings. A daytrip by boat to Rio Dulce or to Playa Blanca is something I would definitely do while you are here! Or kayak in the early morning into the Canyon and explore the green jungle. And of course you can go out and check out the town in the evenings also, but I do want the house sitters to sleep in our house every night.
Who do we want here?
Our perfect house sitters would be a couple who have travelled and/or lived in Central-America before and are a bit familiar with the culture and (sometimes somewhat rural) lifestyle. Other than that, obviously they would be animal lovers, don’t smoke, are tranquil, do not throw parties and are clean people overall.
I hope to hear from you!
