I'm a teacher and a writer, originally from Berkeley, California. Two years ago I returned to the States as a fiction fellow at the University of Wisconsin, Madison after thirteen years living and teaching abroad in Togo, Tanzania, Ghana and Uganda. I'm working to complete me first novel.
I love plants and pets of all kinds. I've been both a dog and cat owner, and have experience taking care of horses. I can even milk a cow! I love being outside, and am more than happy to give indoor or outdoor plants the love and care they need.
I'm very used to 'challenging' living situations in regards to power, water or remoteness. At the same time, I'm comfortable in luxury homes and know how to care for beautiful spaces. I speak French because of my time living in Lomé, as well as basic Kiswahili and Twi. I've spent a considerable amount of time in Paris, and I'm comfortable in both urban and rural environments.
As a writer, all I really need is a quiet kitchen table and, ideally, a room with a view -- any view! Although I'm relatively new to housesitting, international schools provide fully furnished houses to their teachers, so I'm used to caring lovingly for spaces that are not mine. I love traveling the world and I'm so excited to begin this new journey.
Why I want to house sit
I'm working on both a collaborative writing project, which allows me to work from anywhere, and my own novel. I need peace and quiet, but writing can be lonely -- and pets are wonderful company!
I'm new to international housesitting, but hopeful that it will allow me to keep my living costs low while providing quiet and pleasant places to write, combined with the excitement of discovering new places when I need to take a break. I love being in and caring for a true home and animals, but I'm uncertain where to settle at this transitional time -- lavishing someone else's plants and pets with attention seems like the perfect solution.
As an international school teacher, I've lived in multiple furnished homes in several countries which were mine only for a time. While not traditional housesitting, I've had plenty of experience taking loving care of homes that were not my own. I've also taken care of friends' homes and pets on multiple occasions, and have many references available upon request.
