We are long-time Midwesterners from Kansas. For the past 26 years, Cheryl has worked for a large university, while Charlie was a partner in his law firm. In between maintaining a house and raising a family, we've also done a lot of traveling, one of our passions. We’re now looking forward to making house-sitting around the U.S. and the world our new job.
We have had and loved many pets over our lives, so we speak both dog and cat fluently! Having spent a lifetime in the company of pets, we have also had our fair share of experience with animals having special medical needs. So we are quite comfortable administering medications or addressing any other medical conditions your pet may have or develop while you’re gone.
We both caught the travel bug early. In her childhood years, Cheryl’s family lived around the U.S. and Europe before settling down in the Midwest. In college, she studied abroad in Germany, while Charlie did the same in Switzerland.
We are very fit and active non-smokers. Hiking is one of our favorite activities, so if you have a dog (or any other animal) that needs lots of exercise, (s)he’ll be getting it with us!
In addition to maintaining their own home, Cheryl has assisted with the upkeep and management of rental property owned by her parents when they are away traveling.
We are both very conscientious and like to keep things neat and clean. You can be sure we will treat your home and surroundings with exceptional care.
Why We House-sit
We figure if you’re going to be in entrusting your house and beloved pets to us, it’s only fair to let you know why we do this.
Pets. One of the things that attracted us to house-sitting is the pets. We love to travel, but we find ourselves missing the company of cats and dogs on longer trips. So for us, taking care of your pet(s) is not simply an extra responsibility—it’s one of the reasons why we actually prefer house-sitting as a way to experience the world.
Experiencing other cultures. Our earliest travel experiences involved living in another place, rather than vacationing there. Cheryl was only four years old when her family moved to Amsterdam for a year while her father taught there. She later studied abroad in Germany for a year during college. And the first time Charlie left the country, he lived for two months with a family in Germany while studying the language there. Probably for this reason, we both associate traveling with experiencing different places over an extended period, rather than simply vacationing there. We also like to take traveling vacations, but that’s a different kind of trip than the one we take when you entrust us with your home. Taking care of your property and pets is our first and only priority while you’re away.
We’re kind of homebodies anyway. As I write this on our back porch on a sunny spring Kansas day, Cheryl is upstairs on the computer designing a birthday present for our daughter’s 22nd birthday. We love hanging out in our home. As much as we love to travel, we’ve also spent the past 30 years maintaining and enjoying all the benefits that come from being able to spend time in a comfortable home. And that joy and satisfaction doesn’t just go away simply because we also have a desire to strike out and see other areas of the world. So how do we reconcile these two competing desires? House-sitting. It may not be our home, but we’ll treat it every bit as such for the short amount of time we have the privilege of keeping it safe and sound while you are away.
