We have a really nice log house in the woods. My Mom has been living alone in it for 6 years, however now she's moving to Fredericton. The house was on the market for a while, but no one is interested since it is isolated and only has one bathroom. We'd like to find a housesitter(s) from September until the spring, or you could possibly continue to be a caretaker for the place indefinitely. (We'd have to discuss the possibility of it being sold next year.)
It is quite isolated in winter - so it helps if you enjoy snowshoeing and cross country skiing. There is one dog still there (a Labrador) which my Mom would prefer to leave there instead of trying to find another home for it. (A dog is often useful to bark when vistors come.) There is a moderate amount of physical work - mostly bringing in firewood and shovelling snow (in winter).
The house has has wireless internet access (but only 0.5 Mbps right now); as of a couple of years ago, cell phones did not work here, only the landline (or satellites!).
How isolated? Nearest civilization (i.e. shopping center) is 20 minutes drive. It is perfect for someone who wants to get away from crowds, noise, and pollution: a writer, painter, or someone on Sabbatical. Have a look at the photos of the beautiful log house that accompany this profile. More details can be provided after you contact me.
This would work best for a couple (it may be too much work for one person - although my Mom in her 70s managed 6 winters on her own) who is in good health.
Ideally you will have a 4 wheel drive car; this is useful when the road is bad. Knowing how to drive a tractor is also an advantage -- you can use the tractor to plow the snow in winter and so we don't have to hire a neighbour to do it.
