Something different. I challenge anyone to name
20 more beautiful places on Earth than the Hana
Maui, Hawaii USA area. I have five acres here.
They are 4.5 miles from Hana town but off-power
[propane and car battery used]. There are
diverse extraordinary recreational opportunities
minutes away. The land sits on the side of the
mountains with the sights and sounds of the
ocean ever present. There is one neighbor.
I am considering a longer-term "sitter". It
would take too long to explain operations and
necessities to a short-termer; besides, they
would break something for sure. Speaking of
breakage, an absolute requirement is a natural
mechanical aptitude and common sense.
Most people would consider this as roughing
it. The sitter would need to live in the small
loft of a metal barn sleeping on a cot [I have
lived there]. It is currently used to store
tools and supplies. I have never bothered to
build a house in the 23 years I've lived here.
Nothing in the system works unless you make it
work or keep it working - this makes it livable.
Livability aside, the only need for a sitter is
to keep the overwhelming growth under control
when I'm not here. Control requires mowing,
spraying herbicides [no more harmful than
household products] and trimming - and all the
equipment required to do that requires care and
maintenance. An idea of part of the workload: in
the winter, mowing every 10 days is possible;
otherwise, every week. It takes 7-8 hours to mow
and much of it is on slopes.
Characteristics of person for this position
would be someone who would rather be outside
than inside - being in a beautiful
tropical "paradise" where everything grows like
crazy is a bonus. After all, a properly
designed tropical house [not that I have one] is
one in which you might step inside, linger for a
while, and go back out. This would also be
someone who really enjoys camping and
regrets having to go home. Someone who enjoys
physical activity/work and derives satisfaction
from results. Someone who can live without TV
and a daily newspaper [radio prevails]; who has
evolved to prefer beautiful peace and quietude
as opposed to a razzle dazzle lifestyle.
Someone who is comfortable with him/herself.
And, as indicated above, one who is handy, who
fixes their own stuff and thinks on their feet.
This is not for dreamers, escapists or
fantasizers.
Although it does not cost much to live on
this property, financial stability would be
necessary.
Anyone still with me? If so, please read
this summary again.
